Early Voting Begins in the Texas Primary Runoff

By Kemberlee Kaye, 07/23/12

With early voting beginning today in the Texas Primary runoff elections, all eyes are on the showdown between sitting Lt. Governor David Dewhurst and Ted Cruz.  The Texas Republican Senate Primary raceis illustrative of a national phenomenon.  Conservatives and liberty minded individuals dissatisfied with the status quo and go along to get along politians within the Republican Party are piling their support and money behind candidates like Ted Cruz.

Ted Cruz heads in to the runoff election ahead of Dewhurst in the polls. A few weeks ago, Public Policy Pollling (PPP) released a poll showing Cruz ahead 49-44.  Amongst "very excited voters," Cruz's lead rocketed to 59-36.  Those unenthusiastic and consequently least likely to vote in the runoff favored Dewhurst 51-43.

The breakdown of support based on ideological preference provided expected but telling results. Ted Cruz gained the overwhelming support of Tea Partiers 71-26 meanwhile Dewhurst lead the "somewhat conservative" contingent 49-45 and the moderates 70-20. As PPP noted, "the fact that Dewhurst is leading by 50 points with moderates yet still losing overall is a pretty good sign of how relevant that voter bloc is within the Republican party these days."

In many ways, the Texas Senate Primary election is a referendum on the Republican old guard. The Dewhurst campaign with the assistance of the Repubican hardliners have mounted quite an offensive against Tea Party favorite, Ted Cruz.  Yet bottomless pockets, resources and baseless (and downright dirty) attacks haven't been enough to quell the Tea Party insurgency.  A victory in Texas would provide a rallying cry nationwide and would prove with certainty that it is possible to defeat the Republican Establishment.  It is possible to elect candidates who will fight for limited government, national sovereignty and individual liberty.  More importantly, victory would reset the bar, redefining "acceptable."

Building a contingent of solid, liberty loving conservatives in the U.S. Senate is essential to repairing our country and Ted Cruz would be an invaluable resource. In the home stretch of this contentious election, I encourage you to get involved. Steering the ship back to a safe harbor requires all hands on deck. Won't you help?
